The role of the first responder is inherently stressful, with many systemic challenges facing the workforce. It can be discouraging to repeatedly respond to service calls from individuals with chronic conditions, including substance use disorder, and not have the resources to help. While this is a normal emotion in response to the first responder’s work environment, it may result in a lack of empathy, burnout, compassion fatigue, and the worsening of one’s mental health. First responders who know how to care for their own mental health and prioritize wellness and self-
care will be better able to manage the stress associated with their work.
